Research, Development and Innovation

Understanding the complex dynamics of water and the environment, the impact of pollution on aquatic life, and the effects of climate change on water resources, human society, and individuals are fundamental to understanding the human-nature system. The strength of our Hub lies in the fact that Lund University is a comprehensive institution with nine faculties, encompassing expertise across multiple disciplines.
Research clusters
Research in our Hub is organised under two clusters.
Research Cluster 1 “Water solutions for a sustainable future in a changing environment”
– led by Professor Magnus Persson, Water Resources Engineering Division (TVRL).
The research in this cluster is focused on finding solutions to water challenges worldwide with a special focus on the global south. The research in the cluster is organized around three themes.
- Rural water solutions led by Assistant Professor Erik Nilsson (TVRL)
- Urban water solutions led by Assistant Professor Johanna Sörensen (TVRL)
- Coastal water solutions led by Assistant Professor Caroline Hallin (TVRL)
Research Cluster 2 “Middle Eastern Water and Environmental Informatics”
– led by Associate Professor Hossein Hashemi, Center for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES).
The research in this cluster is focused on the innovative methods and new tools for the acquisition and analysis of environmental data for the Middle East. The research in the cluster is organized around four themes.
- Sand and dust storm monitoring and mitigation led by Assistant Professor Amir Naghibi (CMES)
- Water Resources Accounting in the Middle East led by Professor Ronny Berndtsson (CMES)
- Hydrosolidarity and governance for sustainability led by Professor Karin Aggestam (CMES)
- Water, climate and environmental security and cooperation in the Middle East led by Assistant Professor Lina Eklund, Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES)
Activities
- Research: We conduct research and publish research papers.
- Seminars: We organize seminars for our researchers and students.
- Collaboration with Global Partners: We work closely with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and researchers at the other UNU Hubs to amplify our impact and reach.
